What Causes Excessive Sleep and Why Should You STOP Sleeping Too Much
If you sleep too much, too often, you’re not alone. I personally used to sleep for about 10 hours, and sometimes even up to 14 hours a “night”, at least a couple of times a week, even when I had important things to do.
It has been more than a couple of years since I’ve overcome my excessive sleep problem. Today I sleep 6-7 hours a night and have more energy than ever before.
I can tell you from my own experience – excessive sleep can have some devastating outcomes…
Excessive Sleep – Effects
First, I don’t know about you, but most of the times I overslept, I felt tired all day, and sometimes even had headaches and trouble concentrating.
But that’s not all…
It’s obvious that sleeping too much is time waste. It brings to un-productiveness, and to failing in carrying out daily chores and responsibilities.
Excessive sleep makes you look lazy and irresponsible, which in turn can even damage your relationships. Plus – when you oversleep you may feel embarrassed and self-resented, which in time can have a very negative effect on your self-esteem.
One thing for sure – excessive sleep can be addictive, because your sleep system gets all ‘messed up’…
For example:
You oversleep ? you’re not tired enough at night and stay up late ? you oversleep again ?
But why do you sleep too much?
Excessive Sleep- Causes
Most chances are that you oversleep, because of a combination of poor sleep and lack of motivation.
Poor sleep means that you’re not getting enough rest from your sleep. If you feel tired all day after 7-8 hours of sleep, it’s likely that you’re getting low quality sleep.
Your sleep may be damaged by bad habits or conditions, such as staying up late, shift work, bad nutrition, a noisy environment, or even by a physical disorder, like Sleep Apnea (Interrupted breathing during sleep).
In other words, what you need is not more sleep, but BETTER sleep.
But let me ask you a question…
Suppose you oversleep very often, being late to work or other engagements from time to time…
What are the odds that you’d oversleep on the morning you have to get up early to catch a flight to a long vacation abroad?
Got the hint?
Let’s get to the point – Even if you’re having poor sleep, when you really want to wake up you will, won’t you?
You may have to admit having some kind of “mind barriers”, that are keeping you in bed…
I’m talking about emotional/ psychological issues, such as lack of motivation because of stress, fears, depression or simply boredom – living without a sense of purpose and lack of inspiring goals.
When it’s time to wake up you ‘choose’ to stay in bed, over waking up and facing life. In other words – you’re using your bed as an escape mechanism, or – your “comfort zone”.
The causes and effects of excessive sleep may be affecting each other in an ongoing cycle, as you may be experiencing yourself.
For example:
You’re mildly depressed ? you oversleep ? you have no free time and you’re disappointed of yourself ? you get even more depressed ?
TIP: The more tired you feel when the alarm goes off, the more motivated you need to be to overcome the temptation to go back to sleep. That’s why it would probably be a good idea to deal with both sides of the coin – improve your sleeping habits AND increase your self motivation.
