Why You Have Trouble Falling Asleep and How to Fall Asleep Quickly

By Rotem Cohen, January 6 2009

Most people with sleep problems complain, either about trouble falling asleep, or about trouble staying asleep – meaning – they wake up a few times during the night.

I’ve had both of these problems myself at some point in my life…

Like most sleep problems, those two come from just about the same causes - a combination of emotional problems and bad habits that are damaging your sleep system.

Here are some of the most common reasons you may have trouble falling asleep, or staying asleep through the night…

You’re TRYING to Fall Asleep

You may be lying in bed and thinking – ‘I have to fall asleep’. It won’t work. Falling asleep should come naturally. You shouldn’t force it.

Stop focusing on falling asleep. Don’t look at the clock and don’t calculate how long you have left to sleep. Instead – relax, and just say to yourself that you’re resting. Let your mind ‘drift’, until you fall asleep.

You’re Not Relaxed Enough to Sleep

We all have times when our ‘racing mind’ keeps us up in bed for hours, or wakes us up in the middle of the night.

Everyone has problems and things to worry about, but if you want to get a good night’s sleep, you have to learn to put those aside and relax…

Each one has there own way to relax – some meditate, some take a warm bath or read a book. I find it helpful to write down my thoughts before sleep – things to do and so on. You may want to try it yourself.

You’re Not Tired Enough to Sleep

When your bed time comes, you may have trouble falling asleep and sleeping through the night, because your body wasn’t ready for sleep in the first place.

It usually happens because of:

1. Not sticking to a steady sleep schedule

Example: You oversleep until noon in your day off.

2. Lack of physical activity

Example: You drive to work, sit all day in an office, then drive back and sit in front of the TV all evening.

3. Stimulants

Example: You have a cup of coffee in the evening.

As you can see, there are many things that you can do to make sure you fall asleep quickly every night, and get high quality sleep. Getting your sleep system OPTIMIZED means better health, more time and a lot more energy…
