How to Overcome Your Secret Addictions

I guess I’m putting myself on the line here by telling you this, but I don’t care…

The truth is that for years I’ve had the habit of watching online porn for about half an hour a day, almost every day.

Internet Addict

The habit was so strong that you could call it an addiction. I’d do it even when I didn’t really feel like it, or when I should have been doing other things. (By the way, my wife had known about this almost ever since we first met.)

I knew it was bad for me. Besides the obvious time waste, it was the lack of self control that bothered me most. Besides, it’s been pretty obvious to me all along that (like most ‘digital addictions’), it was simply an  escape  mechanism, a way to procrastinate on less ‘attractive’  tasks and responsibilities…

Anyway, with the inspiration of some of the self development material that I’ve been consuming over the years, especially the Habit Busting program (that I’ve listened to several times lately), I’ve finally did it…

On the 1st of this month I wrote down my resolution to avoid watching porn for at least until the 21st of the month. I also wrote down some of the reasons for doing this. One the most important ones was that it would raise my self esteem and improve my self discipline.

I can’t say that I didn’t have a craving every now an then, but overall it’s been quite easy. Much easier than I’d thought it would be. You see, in the end it was all a matter of making a decision and committing to it.

By the way, on the 21st (about a week ago) I allowed myself to “bounce back”, on purpose. Why? Not because I had a strong desire to do it, but simply because I thought it would be wise to do so. Instead of waiting for the bounce-back to happen without my control, I did it by decision.

Do You Have a ‘Digital Addiction’?

There are tons of resources that can help overcome internet addiction or porn addiction, but if you ask me, there’s no need to make things more complicated than they really are. Those so called addictions are simply habits that can be overcome pretty easily…

All it takes is that you be honest with yourself to discover what’s causing you to behave the way you do, and then make a solid decision to break the habit once and for all.

What’s stopping you from breaking your limiting or self damaging habits?

If it’s fear of failure, simply allow yourself to fail. Seriously. Decide to give it your best shot on one hand, but on the other hand, promise yourself not to feel too bad if you fail.

Another thing that stops people from breaking bad habits is lack of focus. It goes like this…

You’re thinking: “I need to stop eating junk food” and then thoughts of all the other bad habits you have rise – maybe you’re also drinking too much coffee, not exercising, go to bed too late, watch too much TV, check email 70 times a day and so on.

Especially if you’re just starting out, and you need to build your self discipline, then just take one small step forward…

Decide today to break just one bad habit…

Write it down – include the start date, end date (“at least until…”) and also why you’re doing it. The reasons don’t have to be huge, because the biggest reason should be – “to prove myself that I can do it”.

I’m pretty sure I’ll never watch any porn again, and even if I do, it would be under control. I would never, ever let it become a habit again.
