How Breaking Your Bad Habits Can Raise Your Energy, Motivation and Self Esteem

By Rotem Cohen, January 21 2010

Like most people, you too probably have at least one or two habits or compulsive behaviors that you’d be better off without…

Soon I will give you some of my best tips on breaking bad habits, but for now I would like to start off by helping you build up the motivation to break these bad habits once and for all.

I’m not talking about nail biting, cracking knuckles or nose picking. Although these can be pretty bad for you, there are some bad habits that have much broader effects…

I’m talking about habits like:

Smoking - Drinking - Overeating

Gambling - Compulsive shopping – Digital Addictions

Laziness - Procrastination - Oversleeping

Negative thinking - Complaining

Habits like these can hold you back from living the healthy, successful and fluffing life that you are capable of leading, because they have a whole range of negative effects…

It begins with the direct effects on your health and energy level, your productivity, finances and relationships. But it doesn’t stop there…

At some point you become aware of your negative behavior and of the fact that you’re unable to control it. Your self esteem starts to suffer as a downward spiral begins…

You start asking yourself…

“why am I doing this?”

“how can I be so stupid?”

and later it turns to…

“I guess that’s who I am”

or

“I can’t control myself. I’m hopeless”

“I’ll never do anything with life”

and so on.

Gain Back Your Self Esteem by Breaking Your Bad Habits

I should point out that bad habits are usually there to fill some void. In other words – there are underlying causes to them, like stress or depression.

You may think that it’s best to deal with the causes of your behavior, and you may have a point. However…

Overcoming a damaging habit that is hard to break can often be at least as effective. It can become a springboard…

First you will gain all the wonderful things that breaking the habit itself (and replacing it with a good one) will do to your life – like better health and more energy and productivity. It’s likely that your relationships will improve as well.

If you think about it, you can become more successful in many areas of your life, just as a result of breaking that one bad habit. And it’s still not all…

You see, succeeding to break a strong bad habit makes you more confident in your ability to control yourself and your life. You gain more self respect, and probably more respect from others.

Do you see how powerful this can be?

Breaking one bad habit can drastically increase your self esteem and self motivation. It might turn out to be the beginning of an ongoing transformation process.

The bottom line is that if you have a bad habit that is damaging you physically and mentally, you need to raise all your available power to overcome it.

It might become the best thing you’ve ever done for yourself.

In my next post I will give you a few powerful tips to help you break some of your worst habits. Until then, please share your thoughts.
